Description
FANG Fang Mvè reliquary figure. From Akuluzok, near Minvoul (Gabon), 20th century Height: 62 cm. An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 6AF-3681, indicates a date of 1937 ± 8 years. Hardwood, brass. Male reliquary statue. The eyes are made of coffee beans. The clasped hands hold a small offering bowl. The navel is strongly emphasised by a cylindrical shape. The genitals are well-defined. The headdress, featuring a three-crested cap, is typical of the Mvè people. The brass inlays on the forehead, the chest and the sides are likely the result of Ngoumba influence, a phenomenon that is quite rare in a region that remained isolated for a long time; however, due to transport links, it was more exposed to influences from the north (present-day Cameroon) than to those that might have come from the south (Gabon). These inlays represent scarifications and decorative elements of clothing with which men adorned themselves at the beginning of the century. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection.
