Description
FANG Fang Mvè reliquary statuette. From Kom, near Minvoul (Haut N’tem, Gabon). Height: 68 cm (of which 34 cm is the torso). An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 3AD-2789, indicates the date as 1941 ± 6 years. Hardwood with a dark brown patina. The headdress features three braids typical of Mvè sculptures. The circular eyes are rendered using cylindrical beads inlaid into the wood. The heart-shaped face and the mouth, formed by a crescent shape at the bottom of the face, are reminiscent of Kwèlé masks (see the Kwèlè ekuk mask with enveloping horns), who are, moreover, neighbours of the Mvè Fangs.
