Description
FANG Fang Okak reliquary. 20th century. Height: 39 cm (statue) and 44 cm (basket). An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 3AD-2805, indicates the date 1948 ± 8 years. Set upon a bark basket sewn together with basketry cord, containing the bones of the clan’s or family’s notable ancestors. Hardwood with a black patina. Brass eyes. Brass nails on the navel and on the braids of the headdress. Necklace of white beads. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Bibliography: Published in *Le Souffle des Esprits*, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, Pierre & Hadrien Redouin, 2012, p. 99. Description: This figure represents the spirit of a remarkable ancestor whose skull and a few bone fragments were reverently preserved in the bark bone basket. The body’s form is reminiscent of a ‘newborn’. Indeed, amongst the Fangs, a newborn child always reincarnates the soul of one of its ancestors.
