Description:
The mouth of this mask takes on a haughty, disdainful expression. This Fang ngil mask exudes a strong sense of severity. The ngil was, in fact, a brotherhood of justice that was summoned when misfortune (illness of unknown origin, suspicious death, etc.) suddenly befell the village. It would identify the ‘sorcerer’ responsible for the misfortune. The punishment consisted of a severe beating, which could even result in death.
