Estimate €800 - €1,200
Description
FANG Fang Ngil mask. Height: 57 cm. 20th century. Light wood. White kaolin patina. The scarification marks are typical of the Fang tradition: three vertical lines run across the nose, three horizontal lines cross the centre of the face, above which are sawtooth-shaped scarification marks. The inside of the mask reveals traces of carving with an adze. This mask was secured by two holes on the sides. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Bibliography: Published in *Le Souffle des Esprits*, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, Pierre & Hadrien Redouin, 2012, p. 66. Description: The mouth of this mask takes on a haughty, disdainful expression. This Fang ngil mask exudes a strong sense of severity. The ngil was, in fact, a brotherhood of justice that was summoned when misfortune (illness of unknown origin, suspicious death, etc.) suddenly befell the village. It would identify the ‘sorcerer’ responsible for the misfortune. The punishment consisted of a severe beating, which could even result in death.
