Description
FANG
Ngil mask.
20th century.
Height: 53 cm.
An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 6AF-3739, indicates the date as 1945 ± 10 years.
Lightweight wood covered with kaolin and black plaster on the pyrographed surfaces.
It features two side holes for the fastening cord, below which are a series of holes for securing the camouflage raffia. This mask could also be suspended by a hole drilled at the top of the headpiece. The mouth is carved vertically. Around the elongated nose are pyrographed scarifications in the shape of saw teeth, supported by three horizontal lines. Beneath the eyes, eleven vertical lines have been carved, delineating the lower eye socket.
