NGOUMBA Reliquary figure From Endome, near Bitam (Gabon). 20th century. Height: 60 cm. Hard, heavy wood with a black-brown patina. The lacquered coating on these figures was produced by mixing copal, charcoal powder and palm oil whilst hot. Copal gives the coating its lustre, charcoal gives it its black colour, and palm oil provides the flexibility needed to apply it to the sculpture. The eyes are brass rings, the pupils are made of mirror glass, and the teeth are clearly defined. The figure wears bracelets on its hands and feet and has decorative brass studs. The hands hold an offering horn containing preparations made from fragments of tree roots, small pieces of charcoal, pinches of earth, pulverised herbs, seeds and various types of bark, … Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection.
