Description
MUMUYE Statue 20th century. Height: 88 cm. Heavy wood, dark patina with traces of red pigments on the head and chest. This male sculpture displays a stylistic fusion of a human head and a dog’s head. Each ear is adorned with a necklace of fine beads. Their distinctive treatment illustrates what the earlobes might have looked like after the removal of the traditional discs that were once in fashion (these disappeared under the influence of Islamisation and Christianisation), which were inserted into the centre of the earlobes and caused them to stretch. The two eyes, rendered with white beads, stand out clearly against the face. The overall impression is fairly neutral. The carving is quite rough, executed with a knife or pruning knife, the marks of which are visible throughout the statue. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection.
