Description
MUMUYE Double-headed statue. 20th century. Height: 70 cm. Medium-weight wood, dark patina. The sculpture is polished and bears traces of sawtooth-shaped scarification on the chest. The circular treatment of the ears illustrates what the ears might have looked like when wearing the traditional discs inserted into the centre of the earlobes. The sagittal crest is a stylised representation of a headdress once in fashion; it is difficult to distinguish it from the caps worn by Mumuye warriors, such is the degree of stylisation.
