Description
CHAMBA Pair of statues 20th century. Height: 69 cm. Medium-weight wood, with a dark, crusty patina covering the entire body. The belly of each figure, situated at the centre of gravity, is encircled by fine beads which draw attention to this part of the body, which is likely the key feature of these statuettes. In the centre of the abdomen, two fine beads may allude to the notion of twins, which was a remarkable family and social event and conferred upon the parents a very special status that ordinary folk envied. The navels are clearly marked by a half-sphere. The two arms, finely sculpted, fall very elegantly along the body, forming a V-shape. The legs, exaggeratedly short, lend the statue an impression of solidity. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: These statuettes achieve a striking artistic synthesis between a human figure and an animal head (an antelope?) with long, tall ears. The facial expression is gentle.
