Description
CHAMBA
Chamba statue (Issou).
20th century.
Height: 80 cm.
The figure, with its conjoined body, features a male face on one side and a female face on the other. The wood is heavy, with a dark patina bearing black marks against a red background. The plinth was originally set in the ground. The eyes are surrounded by radiating carved lines, which draw particular attention to them. The mouth is wide open and appears to be screaming. The ears are carved in relief. The arms are finely carved and lend great elegance to a figure that is otherwise carved in a rather rough style: knife-cut marks are visible throughout the statuette.
Provenance:
Pierre Redouin Collection.
