Description
CHAMBA
Chamba fertility statue.
20th century.
Height: 95 cm.
Heavy wood, dark patina with traces of red plaster around the eyes and the recessed ears. Traces of white plaster form the whites of the eyes and are applied around the wide-open mouth and on the hands.
The arms, delicately sculpted, lead the hands to rest on the lower abdomen, lending elegance to this sculpture of a woman whose child clings touchingly to her back. Traces of zigzag-shaped scarification are visible on the face.
The carving is rather rough, executed with a knife or pruning knife, the marks of which are visible throughout the statue.
Provenance:
Pierre Redouin Collection.
