Description
CHAMBA Statue with Siamese bodies and heads. 20th century. Height: 66 cm. Light wood, with a reddish patina covering the entire statue. The two bellies, which form the centre of gravity for each figure, are surrounded by fine beads that draw the eye to this part of the body, which is likely the key feature of this statuette. In the centre of the belly, two fine beads may allude to the concept of twins, which was a remarkable family and social event and conferred upon the parents a very special status that ordinary folk envied. The navels are clearly marked by a half-sphere. The two arms of each figure are joined at the chest to form a single limb that falls along the body in a V-shape. The legs are exaggeratedly short, lending the statue an impression of solidity. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection.
