Description
IBIBIO
Crest mask
20th century.
Length: 36 cm.
Medium-weight wood, with a blackish patina, featuring recent coatings of white, yellow, red and blue. The white outline around the eyes emphasises the mask-wearer’s clairvoyant powers.
This headdress mask features a polychrome bird’s head with a movable beak.
Provenance:
Pierre Redouin Collection.
Description:
The Idiong society of diviners and healers frequently used ritual objects featuring birds, notably, as here, at the top of headdresses. This crest mask, in which clairvoyance is emphasised (by the white outline around the eyes), may represent the spirit of a high-ranking diviner who had acquired powers of night vision (associated with nocturnal birds).
