IDOMA Female Idoma divination pot. 20th century. Height: 61 cm; Width: 40 cm. Heavy wood, with a crusty red patina and white coating. The figure, which is a divination pot, is depicted in a seated position. This pot consists of two parts: a lower section in the shape of a receptacle, comprising the figure’s torso and legs, and an upper lid comprising the figure’s head and chest (the arms are cut in two); it was used to divine the future of the patient seeking a reading. Small animals, seeds and the like were placed inside… This sculpture is covered with a thick, crusty red patina – a symbol of the life force – on the body, and a white coating – a symbol of the spirit world – on the head, which is in communication with the afterlife. Description: After performing the customary sacrifices and rituals, and after applying the red coating (blood, etc.) that brings it to life, the pot was opened: the arrangement of the items placed inside enabled the diviner consulted to visualise the events that would affect the patient’s life.
