Description
KAKA Statue 20th century. Height: 41 cm. Light wood, dark patina. The headdress has two points. The eyes are prominent and bulging. Curiously, the teeth are positioned very high up on the face. The ears are carved in relief. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: Used by the Mbir secret society, the main purpose of this type of statuette was to help the dead leave the world of the living to join that of the ancestors. As it channels the forces of the invisible world to make them accessible to the living, it was also used to bring prosperity to the lineage or for therapeutic purposes (in which case it served as a receptacle to ‘imprison’ an illness or a curse).
