Léonard Morel-Ladeuil, born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1820 and died in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1888, was a French sculptor and ornamentalist renowned for his remarkable work in chasing metal. A pupil of master silversmith Antoine Vechte, he developed an exceptional talent for bas-relief and the decoration of objets d'art, in a refined style combining classicism and technical virtuosity. After working in Paris for the goldsmith Christofle, he moved to London, where he collaborated with Elkington & Co, famous for its electroformed goldsmiths. His creations - vases, dishes, bowls and medallions - are distinguished by the richness of the detail, the finesse of the modelling and the elegance of the compositions inspired by mythology, history or literature. Awarded several prizes at the Universal Exhibitions, notably in 1855 and 1862, Morel-Ladeuil helped to elevate metal art to the rank of a major art form. His work, at the crossroads of sculpture and decorative art, perfectly illustrates the XIXᵉ century taste for sumptuousness and craft perfection.
