Note :
Taki 183, real name Dimitrios, is a Greek-American graffiti artist born in New York in the 1950s. In the 1960s, while working as a courier in Manhattan, he began tagging his nickname, "Taki 183", on walls, trains and underground stations. The "183" refers to his address on 183ᵉ Street in Washington Heights, a borough of New York City. In 1971, an article in the New York Times put him in the spotlight, calling him a pioneer of urban graffiti. This article sparked a wave of similar tags across the city, marking the beginning of modern graffiti culture. Taki 183 is recognised as one of the first to popularise tagging on a large scale. He later joined the United Graffiti Artists collective and took part in exhibitions, helping to legitimise graffiti as an art form. Today, his name is emblematic of the history of street art.
