Note :
Lazare-Lévy, born in 1867 in Odratzheim in Alsace and died in 1933 in Tunis, was a French painter associated with the Orientalist movement. Trained in the academic tradition, he took an early interest in light and colour, which he explored during his travels in North Africa. Settling in Tunis at the end of his life, he found the landscapes and daily life of the Maghreb an inexhaustible source of inspiration. His canvases, often oils on canvas or panel, depict market scenes, busy alleyways, souks or cafés, bathed in warm, vibrant light. The artist is characterised by a keen sense of the picturesque and a careful observation of gestures and costumes. His work, which was both realistic and poetic, reflected the fascination of the time with the Orient, while at the same time showing a sensitive and respectful view of local cultures. Present at several colonial exhibitions and Parisian salons in the early XXᵉ century, Lazare-Lévy embodies this generation of travelling artists who sought to capture the beauty and vitality of the Mediterranean worlds.
