Note :
This bronze illustrates a biblical episode from Genesis: Hagar, Abraham's servant and the mother of Ishmael, driven into the desert with her son, implores heaven when the child is in agony, before God intervenes to save them. Produced in an academic style imbued with pathos and realism, the work highlights the expressiveness of the gestures and faces, conveying both the mother's pain and the child's fragility. This composition, which went through several versions (including a marble kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours), testifies to Sicard's taste for subjects imbued with feeling and for a dramatic setting faithful to the canons of official sculpture at the end of the XIXᵉ century.
