Note:
Georges Clairin, born in Paris in 1843 and died in 1919, was a French painter and illustrator associated with the academic tradition and the Orientalist movement. A pupil of Isidore Pils and François-Édouard Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts, he first made a name for himself with his large-scale historical and religious compositions before turning to more intimate scenes and social portraits. His style is characterised by an elegant touch, a refined sense of colour and an often theatrical atmosphere. A keen traveller, Clairin visited Morocco, Spain and Egypt, from where he brought back many exotic canvases imbued with light and sensuality. He is best known for his long friendship and collaboration with Sarah Bernhardt, of whom he painted many emblematic portraits, capturing the grace and power of the famous actress. A socialite painter who was also sensitive to the stage and décor, Georges Clairin embodied the artistic richness and eclecticism of the late XIXᵉ century, between academic tradition and a fascination with elsewhere.
