Note:
Jean-Didier Debut, born in Paris in 1824 and died in 1893, was a French sculptor belonging to the academic tradition of the XIXᵉ century. A pupil of David d'Angers, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he acquired a solid command of modelling and marble work. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1851, he stayed at the Villa Medici in Rome, where he immersed himself in ancient art and the Italian Renaissance, influences that would have a lasting impact on his work. On his return to France, Debut took part in numerous official Salons, where he presented sculptures combining classical rigour and romantic sensibility. His repertoire included mythological, religious and allegorical subjects, as well as busts and public monuments, demonstrating great technical skill and measured elegance. His works, often imbued with grace and sobriety, reflect the balance sought between idealism and naturalism. Although less well known to the general public today, Jean-Didier Debut remains representative of the academic sculpture of the Second Empire, marked by formal perfection and a taste for the beautiful ideal.
