Note :
Robert Combas, born in Lyon in 1957, is a French painter considered to be one of the founders and main representatives of the Figuration Libre movement, which emerged in the late 1970s. Influenced by comic strips, rock music, popular culture and art brut, Combas has developed an exuberant, colourful and abundant pictorial universe, combining human figures, animals, words and symbols. His instantly recognisable style is characterised by strong black outlines, flat expanses of bright colour and an almost wild energy. The artist draws as much inspiration from mythology, history and war as he does from everyday life and contemporary society, often with humour, irony and provocation. Combas claims to be a free, expressive and accessible painter, breaking with the dominant conceptual abstraction of the 1970s. His work explores human passions - love, violence, desire, fear - in an explosion of form and colour. Today, Robert Combas is recognised as one of the most important French artists of his generation, and his work is exhibited in numerous museums and collections around the world, including the MAC in Lyon and the MoCo in Montpellier.
