Biography :
César Charles Étienne GUDIN de La SABLONNIÈRE, Count of the Empire, born 13 February 1768 in Montargis in the Loiret and died 22
August 1812 in Smolensk, was a French general during the Revolution and the Empire. A pupil of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Brienne school, he made a career in the army of the Ancien Régime and then of the Revolution. He became a major general in 1800 and under the First Empire was given command of a division under Marshal Davout. He distinguished himself at the battles of Auerstaedt, Eylau, Eckmühl and Wagram, where he demonstrated his tactical skills. General Gudin was mortally wounded by a cannonball at the battle of Valoutina Gora during the Russian campaign, on 19 August 1812. Buried in a bastion in Smolensk, his remains were returned to his homeland in 2021.
