A.B.E. Period of the Dutch Republic (1796)
(Minor damage, wear to paintings and inscriptions).
Provenance :
-Private collection. Referenced in the collection as coming from the descendants of a burgomaster of the city of Nijmegen.
Historical background:
The citizens' militia of Nijmegen numbered several hundred men, as well as artillery with a wide variety of uniforms. The figure on the obverse is wearing a helmet inspired by the French model of 1791. The allegory of the republic on the reverse is derived from that of the flag introduced for the Navy in March 1796 and designed by Langendjik. Our flag was probably used until 1799, when the civic militia was reorganised and new flags introduced.
