Description
TWO-SICILES (MARIE-CAROLINE OF AUSTRIA, QUEEN OF THE). "HERE IS THE SCOUNDREL MURAT PUBLICLY PROCLAIMED KING OF THE TWO-SILES...".
Autograph letter signed "Charlotte" to her daughter Marie-Christine, Duchess of Savoy and future Queen of Sardinia. S.l., 16 August 1808. 2 pp. 1/2 in-4, initial "V" in gutter in margin, central fold split and restored.
" ... Here is the scoundrel Murat publicly proclaimed king of the Two Sicilies and already giving his orders and royal decrees, all this is very sad and humiliating and can only have an unfortunate end, we are still living as usual and since Leopold's departure even more withdrawn, dear and good Amélie is my only company, consolation, and cares for my sad old age...".
QUEEN OF NAPLES, OPPOSING FAROUCHE TO THE REVOLUTIONARY AND IMPERIAL FRANCE, THE ARCHDUCHESS OF AUSTRIA MARIE-CAROLINE OF HABSBURG (1852-1814) had married Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in 1768. She was the sister of Queen Marie-Antoinette, the great-aunt of Empress Marie-Louise, and the mother of, among others, Marie-Amélie, who married the Duc d'Orléans (who became Louis-Philippe I in 1830). Forced into exile twice during the Revolution and the Empire (1800-1802, 1806-1814), Marie-Caroline was a bitter opponent of the French in general and Napoleon I in particular. Her activism annoyed the English, who forced her into exile in Vienna in 1813, where she died.
