Description
MURAT (JOACHIM).
Letter signed "Joachim Napoleon" as King of Naples, addressed to General Jacques-David-Martin Campredon, Chief of Engineers of his army. Villa royale de Portici [overlooking the sea near Naples, to the south-east], 10 November 1808. 1/2 p. in-4.
"I am sending you herewith a commission as provisional aide-de-camp for colonel d'Hautpould; he will carry out the duties until I have received the Emperor's authorisation to attach this esteemed officer to me definitively. [Colonel of the engineers, Charles-Marie-Benjamin d'Hautpoul, was a veteran of the Egyptian expedition, and in Naples was placed at the disposal of King Joseph and then King Murat. He distinguished himself at the capture of Capri, was appointed aide-de-camp by Joachim Murat, but did not join the Neapolitan army and returned to France in 1810. He was made a general on his retirement].
I have just ordered the Minister of War to place at your disposal 14,000 ducats which, added to the 20,000 which he must give you for the month of 9 February, will make you a sum of 34,000 du[cats]. You will therefore have forty-two thousand ducats available when you have realised the 6,000 ducats you say you have in cash...".
On General Campredon, see n° 134 above.
