Description
MURAT (JOACHIM). "The expedition to Sicily".
Letter signed "Joachim Napoleon" as King of Naples, addressed to General Jacques-David-Martin Campredon, Chief of Engineers in his army. Naples, 9 December 1808. 1/2 p. in-4.
"I have been informed that THE ROADS OF CALABRE ARE EXTREMELY POOR and it is complained that no work is being done on the bridge over the Amato [Calabrian river]; it would be necessary to give orders to establish it; The intendant of the Calabria region [around Cosenza] is collecting 6,000 ducats to repair the road in his province; he is only waiting for the return of colonel Monte-Mayor [Lorenzo Montemayor, future general of engineers] to start work on it. Why isn't this officer at his post? THE ROAD TO ROME IS IN A PITOYABLE STATE, especially the part from Naples to Averse [Aversa, north-west of Naples]; WHY IS IT NOT BEING REPAIRED?
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN THE PREPARATIONS I HAVE ORDERED FOR THE EXPEDITION TO SICILY CAN BE COMPLETED...".
King Ferdinand of the Two Sicilies and Queen Marie-Caroline had taken refuge on the island of Sicily, under the protection of the English. Joachim Murat wanted to drive them out, in order to eliminate their threat so close to the coast of Calabria and thus reunite the lands of his kingdom.
On General Campredon, see no. 134 above.
