Description
MURAT (JOACHIM).
Set of 2 letters signed "Joachim Napoleon" as King of Naples, addressed to the Secretary General of the Council of State, Tito Manzi, Acting Minister of Police.
- Naples, 5 February 1809. " ... I inform you that by decree, I have temporarily entrusted you with the portfolio of the Ministry of the General Police, during the absence of the minister; that you will undoubtedly recognise in this proof of confidence the high esteem in which I hold you...". (1/3 p. in-4).
- Villa Belvedere in Naples, 24 February 1809. "I have received your reports. NO CONSIDERATION SHOULD PREVENT A VISIT TO THE HOUSE OF AIGLINE, AND THE OTHERS mentioned in the reports. HAVE THEM DONE TONIGHT. As for that of Aigline, if it is confirmed that it is the consul of Dannemark, you will have it done with all possible respect by an officer of the general staff given to you by Marshal Pérignon and by a trusted police commissioner. You will not have him arrested until you have acquired proof of his guilt, based on the investigations that will have to be carried out. He should be told that the measure has been taken not against him but against his informant, whom we shall hasten to punish as a slanderer. You will report to me on this operation as soon as it is completed...". (1/2 p. in-4).
The jurist Tito Manzi (1769-1836) had studied law in Pisa with Antoine-Christophe Saliceti and Joseph Bonaparte, who brought him to Naples. He remained in the service of Naples under Joachim Murat, and played an active part in the fight against banditry. After the fall of Murat, he played a double game as leader of the liberal (Napoleonic) sympathisers in Tuscany, but with links to the Austrian Court. Having received a letter from Napoleon I for Marie-Louise in 1818, he passed it on to Neipperg.
