Description
MURAT (JOACHIM). "THAT THIS MONK BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE MILITARY COMMISSION... IN SALERNO, TO BE JUDGED THERE ACCORDING TO THE FULL RIGOUR OF THE LAW...". Letter signed "Joachim Napoleon" as King of Naples, addressed to the Secretary General of the Council of State Tito Manzi, acting Minister of the General Police. Villa Belvedere, Naples, 19 February 1809. One p. in-4. "THE MONEST VINCENZO PALUMBO OF THE DOMINICAN COVENT OF NOCERA HAS BEEN ARRESTED, AND NEUF FUSILS, 10 PISTOLS, 2 GUN BARRELS, 3 BRIQUETS, POWDER AND LEAD HAVE BEEN FOUND HID IN HIS HOME, along with two other rifles in another room of the convent: We owe this discovery to a soldier of the 2nd Neapolitan light infantry who, having approached the monk the previous day to obtain some help, received this reply: "Bring me weapons and ammunition, and take my side; I have other weapons hidden ready to be distributed; Calabria is already in revolt&cra. The report must be in the hands of the justice of the peace of the canton of Nocera; have it delivered to you and give the order for this monk to be brought before the military commission which still exists in Salerno, to be judged there according to the full rigour of the law. Several people known for their little attachment to the Government often meet in the evening at the house of the knight Rivera, formerly intendant of the Post Office in Naples; in this company very equivocal remarks and speeches are made on the affairs of Spain and Austria. Have this house watched...". Provenance: Bibliotheca Lindesiana (stamp). Famous collection of books and manuscripts assembled by Alexander William, Earl of Crawford and Balcarres (1812-1880), known for most of his life as Lord Lindsay, and added to by his son James Ludovic (1847-1913). On Tito Manzi, see no. 140 above.
