Description
MURAT (JOACHIM) AND AROUND. Set of 6 pieces. - MURAT (Joachim). Autograph Apostille signed with his initials (s.l., June 1809, 7 words), on an autograph letter signed by the surgeon-in-chief of the Royal Guard, Jean Péborde, addressed to the commander of the said Guard, General Claude-Antoine Compère (Naples, 24 June 1809), 2 pp. in-folio. Jean Péborde wrote: "I have the honour of telling you that when the Guards of Honour were formed, I entrusted a surgeon with the health service of this squadron. As this corps is almost entirely organised, I believe it is right and proper to grant the position of assistant surgeon-major to Mr Villeneuve, a former army surgeon, commendable for his good morals, his services and his ability, and who adds to all these titles that of having fulfilled the duties to this day. Consequently... I have the honour of asking you to present Monsieur Villeneuve for the above-mentioned post in the proposals that you will make to His Majesty...". King Murat then said: "Approved. Referred to the Minister of War. JM." A pupil of CORVISART, JEAN PEBORDE WAS THE MEDICAL SURGEON TO LOUIS BONAPARTE, JEAN LANNES AND JOACHIM MURAT, to whom he became particularly attached and whom he accompanied to Austria, Prussia, Poland, Spain and Naples. There, he reorganised the Neapolitan army's health service, as well as public assistance and hospitals in general. M. il re delle Due Sicilie"). General Lanusse entered the service of Joachim when the latter was still Grand Duke of Berg and followed him to Naples, where he was made Major General and Grand Marshal of the Palace.
