Description
MURAT (JOACHIM). "THE BRIGANDS HAVE REAPPEARED IN THESE PROVINCES, BECAUSE THOSE WHO WAGED WAR AGAINST THEM HAVE CEASED TO BE PAID...". Letter signed "Joachim Napoleon" as King of Naples, addressed to the Minister of the General Police, Antoine Christophe Saliceti. Royal Villa of Portici [overlooking the sea near Naples, to the south-east], 3 October 1809. One p. 1/2 in-4. "Under the pretext that THE LEGIONNAIRES OF THE 2 CALABRES were continually on the run against the brigands, it was made to me understand that it was perhaps fair to postpone the distribution of the crosses of the Order of the Two Sicilies as well as the medal of 26th March; It was added that it would be difficult to make a choice, because every day legionnaires distinguish themselves and we would be embarrassed to designate those who would have more right to these awards; IT IS TIME TO REWARD THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY ACQUIRED RIGHTS TO THESE MARKS OF HONOUR; I will always be able to reward in the future those who render new services. Therefore, come to an agreement with the M[inist]tre de la Guerre, and present to me without delay the status of the legionnaires who up to now have distinguished themselves the most. THE LEGIONNAIRES OF THE CALABRES ARE DISGUSTED; THE BRIGANDS HAVE RETURNED TO THESE PROVINCES, because those who waged war against them have ceased to be paid and have not been rewarded. Unite again with the Minister of War and the Interior to present me with a list of those who have suffered from brigandage or who, in accordance with my decree, should be rewarded with the property of émigrés; I would like this list to be given to me as quickly as possible. Let me know if you have sent the 3,000 d[enari] that you announced to the General Amato for the needs of the Civic Guard...". On the powerful Antoine-Christophe Saliceti, who was to die of poisoning on 23 December 1809, see no. 130 above.
