Description
MURAT (JOACHIM). "ORDERED THAT ALL THE BOATS BE PUT TO SEA AND THAT THE ARMY BE READY TO EMBARK...".
Autograph letter signed with his initials to General Paul Grenier. [Calabria on the coast of the Straits of Messina, probably September 1810]. 3/4 p. in-8.
"Ordered that all the boats be put to sea and that the army be ready to embark, each corps assembled at its quarters. Everyone claims that the wind will freshen towards ten o'clock or midday, then we will be ready to take advantage of it...".
THE EXPEDITION FROM SICILY (see n° 24 above). Three successive embarkation orders were given: on 30 June 1810 for a general exercise, on the following 5 September, but an English cannonade caused operations to be abandoned, and on 17 September. On that day, a storm arose and the British ships withdrew to the port of Messina. When the heavy weather eased, the order to embark was given, but only General Cavaignac was able to comply. As General Grenier did not follow up, the other two corps did not set sail, and General Cavaignac, finding himself alone against the British and a hostile population, had to reembark and return to Calabria.
