Description
MURAT (FAMILY). [WISHES TO THE EMPEROR FROM THE MURAT CHILDREN WRITTEN AT THE END OF THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN]. 3 autograph letters signed TO NAPOLEON I. 1812. - ACHILLE. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon Achilles". Naples, November 27th, 1812. "Sire, there is not a day when I do not make wishes for all that can contribute to the happiness of Your Majesty, and I am delighted to see arriving a time when I am allowed to offer them to him. I beg Your Majesty to accept them as a token of my gratitude for all his kindnesses. Please, Sire, continue them for me: my greatest desire is to make myself worthy of them. I would like to be, like my father, able to give Your Majesty proof of my devotion. I am with profound respect, Sire, Your Majesty's most humble and most obedient servant and submissive nephew...". (2 pp. in-4). Achille Murat (1801-1847), Joachim's eldest son, settled in the United States, married a grandniece of George Washington, and returned to Europe twice without being able to achieve the success he had hoped for. - LETIZIA. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon". [Probably Naples, 27 November 1812]. "Sire, Mother allows me to offer Your Majesty my wishes for the beginning of this year. I beg Your Majesty to continue his kindness to me and to believe that I will make every effort to make myself worthy of it. Every morning I pray to God for Your Majesty and the King of Rome, I kiss the hands of my dear uncle and embrace him tenderly and respectfully...". The author of this letter was most probably Letizia Murat, who was 10 years old at the time, rather than her sister Louise, who was only 7, and neither of whom had "Napoleon" in their first names. Letizia Murat (1802-1859) married the Marquis Pepoli. - LUCIEN. Autograph letter signed "Napoleon Lucien". Naples, November 27th, 1812. "Sire, I flatter myself that Papa has been kind enough to speak to you sometimes about me and the desire I have to deserve the kindnesses of Your Majesty. Please grant them to me, Sire, and accept the homage of the wishes I make every day for you. If they are fulfilled, nothing will ever be lacking for the happiness of Your Majesty. I am with profound respect, Sire, of Your Majesty, the most humble and most obedient servant and submissive nephew...". (2 pp. in-4). Lucien Murat (1803-1878), the third child of Joachim Murat, bore the title of Prince of Ponte-Corvo and married a Scottish aristocrat. He led a hard life in the United States before returning to France in 1848, where he pursued a political career as a member of parliament and then, under the Second Empire, as a senator. For a time, he was Grand Master of the Grand Orient de France.
