Description
AUTICHAMP (CHARLES D'). "YOUR DEVOTION AND YOUR SERVICES FOR THE ROYAL CAUSE...".
Letter signed with 4 autograph lines, addressed to his "dear Crillon". Bordeaux, February 11th, 1820. One p. in-4, some foxing.
"You should not doubt the interest I take in everything that concerns you, and the desire I have to be useful to you. It would be better to wait until I intend to go to Paris, when, as soon as I arrive, I promise to use every means at my disposal to obtain for you what is so well due to your devotion and your services to the royal cause. All your papers are in my hands and I am still keeping them to use when we intercede. [In his own handwriting, the Count d'Autichamp added:] Never doubt the attachment I have for you, which will only be satisfied when I have been useful to you, I must in any case, Constant recommended it to me [probably Count Constant de SUZANNET, another famous Vendéen general]...". This letter may relate to the death of the Duc de Crillon, François-Félix-Dorothée de Berton des Balbes on 27 January 1820.
ONE OF THE VENDEAN CHIEFS, LE COMTE CHARLES DE BEAUMONT D'AUTICHAMP (1770-1859) had begun a military career under the Ancien Régime. During the Revolution, he entered the service of the Vendéen leader Bonchamps, then, after the latter's death, supported Stofflet, particularly during the "Galerne expedition", and in 1796 was made Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Army of Anjou and Upper Poitou. In 1797, he negotiated an honourable surrender with General Hoche, but when Napoleon I returned, the Comte d'Autichamp tried to raise the Vendée: after some fighting, his peasant troops were defeated. He was made a peer of France under the Restoration, and published Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de la campagne de 1815 (1817) and memoirs that are still unpublished, although they were the subject of a study by Charles Mousnier d'Availles.
