Description
BEAUHARNAIS (EUGENE DE).
Letter signed "Eugène Napoléon" as viceroy of Italy, addressed to Charles-François Lebrun, archtreasurer of the Empire. Milan, 30 December 1808. 1/2 p. in-4 on gilt wove paper with watermarked edges reading "Eugenio Napoleone vice re d'Italia".
Beautiful letter of greetings.
"Prince, I appreciate your expression of good wishes for me. I HAVE UNDOUBTEDLY DONE WHAT I COULD TO SERVE HER MAJESTY AS SHE HAS A RIGHT TO BE SERVED; BUT I DO NOT WANT TO GIVE UP THE HOPE OF DOING EVEN BETTER. There is an ever new incentive, and one which will constantly add to my efforts, if it adds nothing to my means: it is the desire to satisfy my sovereign and to obtain the approval of men such as yourself...".
Enclosed is a copper-engraved portrait of Prince Eugène (foxing).
