Description
BERTHIER (LOUIS-ALEXANDRE). Letter signed "Mal Ale Berthier" to Marshal François-Joseph Lefebvre. Osterode [now Ostróda in Poland], 29 March 1807. One p. in-4. "I hasten to inform you, Monsieur le maréchal, that the Emperor by decree of 25 March 1807, has ADMITTED TO THE RETIREMENT PAY OF THE GRADE OF BATAILLON LEADER, Mr VOTRE FRERE captain in the 25th regiment of light infantry; His Majesty, by the same decree has made him an OFFICER OF THE LEGION OF HONOUR...". Marshal Lefèvre had been leading the siege of Danzig for more than a month, which was to end victoriously in May 1807, earning him the title of Duke of Danzig. Denis Lefebvre (1762-1817), the Marshal's brother, had begun his military career in 1782. He took part in the revolutionary campaigns in Germany and Switzerland, and then in Napoleon's campaigns in Prussia and Poland: wounded by a cannonball on 4 February 1807 during the Altestein affair against the Russians, he was then admitted to retirement. Attached is a copper-engraved portrait of Marshal Berthier (foxing).
