Description
CAMBACÉRÈS (JEAN-JACQUES-REGIS). "HIS IMPERIAL AND ROYAL MAJESTY HAS APPOINTED YOU COUNT OF THE EMPIRE...".
Letter signed as Archchancellor of the Empire, President of the Council of the Seal of Titles, addressed to General Jean-Antoine Verdier. Paris, 22 March 1808. One p. in-4.
"I am authorised, Sir, to inform you that, by decree of the 19th of this month, His Imperial and Royal Majesty has appointed you Count of the Empire. This title will be transmissible to your male descendants, legitimate, natural or adoptive, when you have satisfied the conditions and fulfilled the formalities prescribed by the two imperial statutes of the 1st of this month...".
A GENERAL WHO CROSSED THE HISTORY OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE EMPIRE, JEAN-ANTOINE VERDIER (1767-1839) began his military career as a private at the end of the Ancien Régime, and rose through the ranks to the rank of brigadier general (1796) and then division general (1800). He took part in the First Italian Campaign (wounded at Arcole), the Egyptian Expedition (wounded at Saint-Jean-d'Acre), the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples, the Polish Campaign, the Spanish War, the Russian Campaign (wounded at Polotsk) and the defence of the Kingdom of Italy under Eugène de Beauharnais.
Attached is a copper engraving depicting a dazzling action by General Verdier, taken from Fastes de la nation française by F. Ternisien d'Haudricourt (wet).
