Description
FOUCHÉ (JOSEPH). LE TRIOMPHE DE TRAJAN POUR LE TRIOMPHE DE NAPOLEON] [THE TRIUMPH OF TRAJAN FOR THE TRIUMPH OF NAPOLEON]. Letter signed "Fouché" with 12 autographed lines, in his capacity as Minister of the General Police, addressed to the first Prefect of the Palace, Jean-Baptiste Charles Legendre de Luçay. Paris, 16 February 1807. One p. folio on a two-sided sheet of gilt wove paper on edge watermarked with the imperial eagle and the effigy of Napoleon I. "I have the honour of sending you, Sir, an outline of the EXPENDITURES REQUIRED FOR THE SETTING UP OF THE TRAJAN TRIUMPH OPERA, in accordance with the programme of which Mr Esménard must have given you a copy. I would ask you to kindly order that everything that can be used to stage this opera be supplied from the administration's shops. As for all the new expenses, I am responsible for paying them, and I have ordered my minister's cashier to keep 50,000 f. at your disposal for this purpose, [in his handwriting, Joseph Fouché added:] if this sum is not enough, I will add a new credit...". IN REFERENCE TO NAPOLEON I'S MILITARY VICTORIES IN PRUSSIA AND POLAND (1806-1807), A SERIES OF PIECES OR OPERAS WITH POLITICAL CONNOTATIONS WERE GIVEN IN PARIS IN 1807, including, in October 1807 at the Opéra (Académie impériale de Musique), Le Triomphe de Trajan, composed by Louis-Luc Loiseau de Persuis and Jean-François Le Sueur, to lyrics by Joseph Esménard, with ballets by Pierre Gardel. Under the Empire, Joseph Fouché, Minister of the General Police, exercised control over the press and the theatre until his disgrace in 1810, after which this function fell within the remit of the Minister of the Interior, who already controlled the opening of theatres.
