KNÖTEL (RICHARD). Die eiserne Zeit vor hundert Jahren. 1806-1813. Heimatbilder aus den Tagen der Prüfung und der Erhebung. Kattowitz [then in Prussia, now Katowice in Poland] und Leipzig, Verlag von Carl Siwinna, [ca. 1913]. Oblong folio, (33) ff. mounted on tabs, red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed with flowers, gilt fillet on the edge of the leather on the boards, gilt head, hardback covers preserved; covers and corners a little rubbed (old binding). Illustrated by the author: a composition on the cover, 30 full-page scenes, and a few vignettes in the text. A children's book about Prussia's war of liberation against Napoleon I, conceived in an ultranationalist and very anti-French spirit shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. Its German title can be translated as The Iron Age a hundred years ago. 1806-1813. Images of the Fatherland in Days of Trial and Insurrection. An official painter of the Reich, Richard Knötel was familiar with the military world; specialising in Prussian uniformology, he co-founded the Society for Auxiliary Science of Military History (Gesellschaft für Heereskunde) in 1898. In addition to the battle paintings commissioned from him by Wilhelm II, he illustrated children's books, conservative family magazines and collectable vignettes for Liebig and the chocolate maker Ludwig Stollwerck.
