Description
LAMBALLE (MARIE-LOUISE-THERESE DE SAVOIE, PRINCESSE DE). "THE WISHES THAT I DO NOT CEASE TO FORM FOR HER HAPPINESS...".
Autograph letter signed "M L T de Savoye", highly calligraphed, TO LOUIS XVI. Versailles, 1st January 1784. One p. large folio; trace of tab on verso.
"Sire, I hope that Your Majesty will agree to the wishes I never cease to form for his happiness; there will be nothing left for me to desire if Your Majesty will be convinced that their sincerity equals that of my gratitude, and of the desire I have to deserve the continuation of his kindnesses. With profound respect, Sire, I am Your Majesty's most humble and obedient servant...".
THE PRINCESSE DE LAMBALLE, CLOSE FRIEND OF MARIE-ANTOINETTE. Daughter-in-law of the Duc de Penthièvre (grandson of Louis XIV), Marie-Louise-Thérèse de Savoie-Carignan (1749-1792) entered the inner circle of Marie-Antoinette of Austria in 1774, was a regular guest at the Petit Trianon and the Château de Saint-Cloud, and for a time held the position of superintendent of the Queen's household - she thus became associated with the Queen's black legend, and was wrongly considered to be her lover. First imprisoned with Marie-Antoinette in August 1792, she was then moved to another prison, put on trial and handed over to the mob, who put her to death: for a long time, her body was displayed naked and sexually mutilated. Her head was then presented at the end of a spike at the window of Marie-Antoinette's cell.
