Description
LETTER FROM A SOLDIER. - AUBERTIN. [THE ATTACK ON PETIT-SAINT-BERNARD,
AND THE CAPTURE OF MONT-CENIS]
Autograph letter signed to his father Joseph Aubertin in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in the department of Côte-d'Or. Bousson [in the upper Val de Suse, in Italy, near the Montgenèvre pass], 12 prairial year II [31 May 1794]. 3 pp. in-4, address on spine with vestige of red wax seal, postal mark "Briançon"; soiling, marginal tear without damage to text.
A grenadier in the 6th Battalion of the Côte-d'Or, Private Aubertin was then serving in the Army of the Alps under the command of GENERAL DUMAS (FATHER OF THE ROMANCIER) who was conducting a reverse action against the Sardinians and their Austrian allies threatening the south-east of France. Here he recounts the attack on Petit-Saint-Bernard (24-25 April 1794), the capture of Mont-Cenis and that of Petit-Mont-Cenis (13-14 May 1794).
" ... You will know that we were ataque[r] the St-Bernard on 5 Floréal [24 April] at 10 o'clock in the evening. We were on the march for the attack, we were in 3 columns, we were the centre column. The attack was given very briskly, we took 20 cannons from the enemy, and 800 prisoners of war. We climbed some very high and difficult mountains and held the fort for 6 days.
We went with 30 men per company to the Morienne army to attack Monceny. We attacked it on the 24th of Floréal [13th May], we went up the mountain at 9 o'clock in the evening. On the 25th it was ready. We gave the enemy 5,000 prisoners and 60 cannon, and 600 deserter prisoners who surrendered their weapons at Petit-Monceny. We gave them 12 companies of grennadier composed of 64 men each. All the boys in the country are doing well except Glaude Guiot who was always sick in hospital...".
