Description
LETTER FROM A SOLDIER. - BANCÉ (PIERRE-ANTOINE). "WE FOUGHT HARD WITH THE SPANIARDS. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE VICTORS...".
Autograph letter signed to his father Antoine Bancé in La Ferté-en-Bray [now La Ferté-Saint-Samson in the Seine-Maritime department]. Alcañiz [in Aragon, Spain], 14 September 1809. 2 pp. 1/4 in-8, address on spine, soiling.
A soldier in the 1st company of the 1st battalion of the 114th infantry regiment (Colonel Jean-Pierre Arbod), Pierre-Antoine Bancé belonged to the 3rd corps of the Spanish army under the leadership of the future Marshal Suchet.
" ... I have sent you several letters without seeing any news from you, but I will tell you that I am not surprised because many letters have been stopped. I have the honour of telling you that we fought hard with the Spaniards. We have always been the victors, thank God. Here are several prisoners, not to mention the wounded and the dead, as well as thirty-two flags and several pieces of artillery. I can tell you that we have put them to an extraordinary rout, but I hope it will end soon...".
The soldier Bancé is no doubt referring to Marshal Suchet's victories over General Joaquín Blake's Spanish army, won near Zaragoza at MARIA DE HUERVA and then at BELCHITE (15 and 18 June 1809).
