Description
LETTER FROM A SOLDIER. - BARBERET (ÉTIENNE). [END OF THE "VIREE DE GALERNE"]. Autograph letter signed to his father Georges Barberet in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in the Côte-d'Or department. Bayeux, 3 ventôse an II [21 February 1794]. 2 pp. 1/4 in-4, address on spine; small tears due to opening affecting 2 words. " ... JE VOUS DIRET QUE NOUS AVONS TOUT PARCOURU TOUTE LA VENDE. WE HAVE STILL LOST NINETY THOUSAND IN THREE DAYS AFTER HAVING COLLECTED FOUR BAT. I was lucky not to be wounded and on my return I was wounded climbing over a gun pit, and so I am in hospital at present, but don't worry, I beg you, when it's all over I'm going to be a father, so that soon WE WERE BATTED DURING THE E[S]PASE OF THIRTY-HOURS OF TENT, AND WE CARRIED OUT THE VI[C]TOIRE. We killed as many as thirty in one house, [which] we destroyed...". END OF THE "VIREE DE GALERNE". Although in March 1793 the "military Vendée" was in the hands of the insurgents and the Republic's reaction was initially slow - the decree destroying the Vendée was issued on 1 August 1793 - the effective action of Kléber's fiery blue army caused the royalists to suffer major setbacks. After their defeat at Cholet on 13 October 1793, the remnants of the Vendée army embarked on an exhausting journey (known as the "Galerne swing") that took them from the Loire to Granville and back. Despite some successes, they were defeated at Angers on 3 and 4 December 1793, then crushed at Le Mans (11 December) and Savenay (23 December).
