Description
LETTER FROM AN OFFICER. - MORIN (JEAN-BAPTISTE-LOUIS). THE FUTURE GENERAL MORIN, WOUNDED AT THE PASSAGE OF ADIGE]
Autograph letter signed to his father Charles Morin in Sedan. Vérone, 15 nivôse an IX [5 January 1801]. 2 pp. 1/4 in-4, on letterhead of General Dupont de L'Étang, address on spine; some soiling, tears due to opening without affecting the text.
"I have informed you of our initial successes. We have now crossed the Adige and we are following the course of our successes on the Brenta and the Tagliamento. We hope to achieve much more.
GENERAL DUPONT'S CORPS HAS HAD A FAIRLY LIVELY FIGHT AND A HEAVY CANNONADE IN FRONT OF VERONA. I WAS WOUNDED IN THE FACE; a 27 mm cannonball that fell at half range at the feet of my horse knocked a piece into my head. Fortunately it was removed. We feared for my right eye but it seems certain that I will not lose it. I AM NOT HAPPY AT RIVER CROSSINGS... "
Captain Morin, then aide-de-camp to General Dupont de L'Étang, had been wounded at the Tessin crossing in May 1800, made squadron leader, and had just been wounded again at the Adige crossing before Verona on 2 January 1801. He was then made colonel of dragoons, and served on other battlefields, including Spain, where he was riddled with sabre wounds during a spectacular action. He survived and was made a general in March 1814, shortly before his death.
