Description
MADAME ROYALE (MARIE-THERESE-CHARLOTTE DE BOURBON, KNOWN AS). [RARE WRITING EXERCISES BY THE YOUNG PRINCESS].
Autograph manuscript signed and dated "Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte fecit anno 1786". 2 pp. in-4 on a bifeuillet.
- The first page of writing includes a text which follows: "Henri Quatre was urged to treat with rigour certain places of the League which he had... reduced by force. The satisfaction one derives from vengeance lasts only a moment, said this generous prince; but that which one derives from eternal clemency...". This is a famous saying attributed to Henri IV, and which, in its presentation, is taken here from the Nouveau dictionnaire historique edited by Louis-Mayeul Chaudon (1766, p. 402), republished several times, notably in 1786.
At the head and foot of the page, pen tests: upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers.
- The second page of writing is an alphabet book in which each word has a capital initial.
Madame Royale's proofreader wrote two comments: on the first page, "quite satisfied"; on the second, "very satisfied with the writing and application".
Les Enfants de France had been placed in the hands of several educators, including Abbé Guillaume d'Avaux as tutor and Pierre-Louis Sourdon Dumesnil de Saint-Cyr as writing master.
DAUGHTER OF LOUIS XVI AND MARIE-ANTOINETTE, MARIE-THERESE CHARLOTTE DE FRANCE (1778-1851) was known at court as "Madame Royale". Imprisoned during the Revolution, she was released in 1795 and lived for a time in exile in Vienna. In 1799, she married her cousin Louis de France, Duc d'Angoulême (son of the Comte d'Artois), was able to return to France in 1814, and became Dauphine ten years later when Charles X came to power. The July Revolution forced her into exile once again, and she ended her life in Frohsdorf, Austria.
MADAME ROYALE'S CHILDHOOD WRITING EXERCISES ARE RARELY KNOWN, with less than ten examples.
