Description
MARBOT (MARCELIN DE). Signed document. Valenciennes, 14 January 1815. 1/2 p. in-4; traces of tab on recto and verso. "I agree to the transfer of Mathias Kaufmann, a hussar in the Orléans regiment, to the King's hussars; subject to the approval of His Excellency the Minister of War...". GENERAL DE MARBOT (1782-1854), THE AUTHOR OF CELEBRATE MEMOIRS, was the son of a Revolutionary general and joined the cavalry in 1799. He was successively aide-de-camp to Marshals Augereau, Lannes and Masséna, and was wounded in many battles: at Eylau (1807), at the siege of Saragossa (1809), at Essling (1809), at Znaïm (1809), in Portugal (1811), twice in Russia (1812), at Leipzig (1813)... Made colonel of hussars during the Restoration, he then took part in the battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded again (1815). Banished from 1816 to 1818, he had to wait until 1829 to find a job again; and then became aide-de-camp to the Duc d'Orléans, son of Louis-Philippe I, with whom he took part in the siege of Antwerp (1831-1832), fought in Algeria (1835 and 1840 where he was wounded at Médéa). Made a general in 1838, in 1842 he became aide-de-camp to the Comte de Paris, son of the Duc d'Orléans. He published Remarques sur les Considérations sur l'art de la guerre (Remarks on General Rogniat's Considerations on the Art of War), which were highly praised by Napoleon I when they reached St Helena. Above all, he left a memoir full of verve which, published only in 1891, met with great success but was also criticised for its exaggerations and some borrowings from other authors. Provenance : Bibliotheca Lindesiana (stamp). Famous collection of books and manuscripts assembled by Alexander William, Earl of Crawford and Balcarres (1812-1880), known for most of his life as Lord Lindsay, and added to by his son James Ludovic (1847-1913).
