Description
NAPOLÉON IER. Letter signed "Napoléo" to Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès. Milan, 9 prairial year XIII [29 May 1805]. 1/2 p. in-4; report faded of a sheet of paper. Joined, a certificate of export. "My cousin... I hope that at last the weather will have recovered, and that it will be as warm as the season demands. The people of Genoa seem to want to be reunited with France. THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS REUNION AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES SEEM TO ME TO BE SUCH THAT THEY SHOULD MAKE ME OVERLOOK THE CRITICISMS OF SOME POWERS. In fact, this can only arouse England's animadversion. I imagine that the Minister of Finance has left for Turin, as have the Councillors of State Dauchy and Loisel; if they have not left, please urge them to leave without delay, as I need their help in these departments...". Martin-Michel-Charles Gaudin, the Minister of Finance, was tasked with reorganising the finances of Liguria, which was to be reunited with France on 6 June 1805. Luc-Jacques-Édouard Dauchy and Pierre Loysel had just been appointed Prefect of Marengo and Prefect of the Po respectively. Napoleon I, Correspondance générale, Paris, Fayard, vol. V, 2008, no. 10150.
