NAPOLÉON IER. Letter signed "Napo" to Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès. Elchingen [near Ulm, in Swabia], 28 vendémiaire year XIV [October 20, 1805]. 1/2 p. in-4; marginal ink spot. Joint, a certificate of export. "My cousin, Mr Lebrun must have gone mad. I am writing hastily to Prince Eugène, letters which he has the imprudence to send to Mr Lebrun as they are, and Mr Lebrun is making them public; in truth at 60 years of age, it is too much levity.... " Napoleon I also reprimanded his adopted son Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, for having communicated anything other than extracts from letters to Charles-François Lebrun, Archtreasurer of the Empire and then Governor of Liguria, and severely reprimanded Lebrun for having published what he had received.
