Description
[NAPOLEON IER]. "NAPOLEON, THRICE PROCLAIMED BY THE PEOPLE...". Manuscript from Elba. Bourbons in 1815. Published by the count *********. Dusseldorf: J. Lacman, 1819. In-8, 12 [5 unnumbered pp. of which the 2 versos are blank, 7 pp. numbered without missing x to xvii]-75-(one blank) pp. bradel of glazed basane with corners, spine decorated with gilt fillets and friezes with black title-piece, boards covered with red morocco paper; edges and corners rubbed, small tears in the title-piece (contemporary binding). APOLOGICAL LIBERAL FOR ENGLISH READERS, originally published in 1818 by Barry O'Meara with the radical London publisher James Ridgway. In it, NAPOLEON I STRONGLY REAFFIRMS HIS LEGITIMITY, a legitimacy he bases on his ability to embody the Nation in complete independence: "Napoleon, proclaimed three times by the people, was crowned by the Pope and recognised by the powers of Europe. He created kings. He saw the armies of all the powers of the continent march under his orders". Conversely, he denied any legitimacy to Louis XVIII, who had only been able to impose himself with the financial and military help of foreign powers. RELATED: "MANUSCRIT VENU DE SAINT[E]-HELENE d'une manière inconnue". 124 pp. MANUSCRITE COPY in contemporary Italian script, based on one of the editions given in London in 1817 by John Murray (the one in 109 pp.). ATTACHED: Ein Schreiben von dem Oberconsul Bonaparte an den Bischoff zu Luneville [i.e.: "Un Écrit du Premier Consul Bonaparte à l'évêque de Lunéville"]. Paris, s.n., 1802. Small booklet in-8, 8 pp; fair condition. The attribution of this writing to Napoleon Bonaparte is fanciful, as is the existence of an episcopal see in Lunéville. VERY RARE.
