AUTOGRAPHIC SENTENCE SIGNED BY GONZALO O'FARRILL to the French diplomat Édouard Bignon, then Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
PRO DOMO PLEA BY TWO GREAT AFRANCESADOS OF JOSEPH BONAPARTE. Miguel-José de AZANZA (1746-1826) had first been an infantry officer and then a diplomat before becoming an important politician under Charles IV: Minister of War (1793), Viceroy of New Spain (1796), Minister of Finance (1808), retaining this post in the Junta de Gobierno (1808). In 1808, he rallied to Joseph Bonaparte, who made him Duke of Santa Fe, but he then had to leave Spain with the French and died destitute in Bordeaux. - Born in Cuba to a Spanish-Irish family, Gonzalo O'Farril y Herrera (1754-1831) had a military career, rising to the rank of lieutenant-general, and was also entrusted with a diplomatic mission. Minister of War in 1808 under Charles IV, he retained this post in the Junta de Gobierno (1808). He rallied to Joseph Bonaparte, who made him Minister of War and the Navy, but had to flee Spain when the French left. Although rehabilitated by Ferdinand VII, he died in France.
